Since word got out that a memorial fund was being set up in honour of
John-Henry, events up and down the country have been taking place by
friends, family and of course that long list of admiring girls. The
following is a summary of runs, triathlons, raffles and all manner of
events from the painful to the quite frankly ridiculous. JH would have
been proud!
If you have been involved in anything that brings back memories of JH,
whether this is a sponsored event or just a gathering for a pint or two
in his honour, we would like to know! Please send in your stories. Our
contacts page gives all the details. This picture
was taken in a classy Ukrainian nightclub as JH went about 'educating' the local folk about how real dancing should be done.
Please also look at the forthcoming Diary of events.
If you want to get involved or have any idea of your own, please
email the trustees.

Keven and Sarah get married
Congratulations to Keven and Sarah, family friends of the Credlands who got married in the summer. They were extremely generous and on the night gave donations from the bar to the fund.
Many thanks and best wishes to a very happy Mr and Mrs!

Cambridge City Bumps
This year's May bumps was particularly special as Rob's business, Outspoken decided to put a crew together to
challenge for the John Henry Memorial Cup. Unfortunately we weren't such a disciplined team as JH and gang but we did have lots of fun in the process.
This year's cup was a difficult choice as no less than five City crews won blades but Mike and Nell were at the celebrations to see
the Women's third boat clinch the title. Outspoken will be back next year stonger than ever to try to claim the coveted trophy.
See JH Remembered
for a description of the cup and who it gets awarded to each year.

John Muir Trail
Massive congratulations to Phil, Chris, Paul and Pete who tackled bears and each others smelly feet whilst trekking the John Muir trail!
Phil (nice beard by the way!) wrote before the event:
"In the spirit of John-Henry's profound connection with all things wild, we've decided to honour the memory of this great man with an outdoor adventure that we know he would have loved. The John Muir Trail is a 211-mile hike through the high wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, at elevations of above 10,000 ft for most of its length."
"For those who knew John well, you will know that he was never happier than when he was engaging in some physical challenge that brought him closer to nature,
whether it be rucking in a muddy field with a bunch of equally sweaty men or be stripping down to his underwear to plunge into an icy pool in the middle of the winter."
I was under the impression that it would be a walk in the park with plenty of sunshine and a few relaxing swims in the mountain streams but heavy snow and blizzards seemed to prevail
and it was an amazing effort by these guys. Apart from the physical exterions, the team managed to raise about £2,000 for the fund so thank you guys for such a tremendous effort. John Boy would have been proud.

May Hill Massacre a storming success!
It was yet again another fantastic May Hill Massacre this year with a record turn out of runners and supporters (about 40?) all descending on the Credland's patch. The event has become
a yearly gathering at Boulsdon Lea and as always Mike and Nell did a sterling job of looking after us all. My highlight was Nell's amazing flapjacks at the end of the
race but equally memorable was Tom drinking out of a rubber chicken (and out of Jess's rubber wellie) and Mike celebrating another year of wisdom with a beer to hand. Many thanks guys for such a
fantasic weekend (and if anyone has that group photo, do please send it in so I can post it here).

Women triumph in trans Wales trek
Ann Birch, Mo Braham, Sharon King, Jane Hewlett, Rosie Maule, and Nell Credland have trekked 90 miles, unsupported across Wales from Knighton to the coast.
Nell writes: "Thank you to everyone who sponsored us on this trek across Wales. With red kites overhead, the weather was kind; no mists to get lost in and just a few gales. The locals warned us about going up into the wild hills but we kept going. They were also impressed how fast we went and that we carried our belongings.
People were generous to us along the way giving donations to the fund; perhaps it was our stunning stripy hats. We arrived at the sea just as there was a beautiful red sun setting and a purple sky. It was a perfect end to the journey. John Henry would have had a swim and that was our plan but we were wimps and instead persuaded a handy Welshman to take our photo as a big wave came over our feet.
JH seemed not far away as we climbed hills, marvelled at views, had lots of laughs and picnicked well as he would have done with that big smile".
You can still sponsor the ladies for their remarkable achievment.

Massive congratulations to Claire Dentith who has been on expedition, climbing to the dizzy heights of
Machu Pichu. Here's Claire looking pleasantly surprised that she made it all the way up and is still able to smile.
Well done mate!

Norseman Xtreme Triathlon
We finished! And it only took us 16 hours (well Alex Porter, a new JHMF fundraiser did
it in 14h30 but he shaves his legs!!), we were a bit disappointed to discover that
the cable car didn't work so it took us another 2 and half hours to get off the
mountain which was exciting especially since it was dark and Patrick "Country Squire"
Watson decided to nose dive into a rather pointy rock. Anyway we're on You Tube if
anyone wants to have a look, James features prominantly after 6 seconds "this is
madness" and I'm there about half way through...fantastically cheesy soundtrack as
well.

Cambridge City Bumps
Cambridge City bumps finally came to an end after another thrilling 4 days of bumping mayhem.

and amazed everyone with their gritty determination. See JH Remembered

Devon Coast to Coast
The Devon coast to coast is a tough 140 mile, 2 day event encompassing lots of cycling, running, orienteering and kayaking
over Dartmoor and Exmoor. Thomas managed to persuade Ben, Rob and Andy that this was a walk in the park, so they readily signed up, only to find
Tom pulling out at the 11th hour after his fight club debut ended in a sprained ankle (see previous
event). Fortunately this didn't spoil the fun with Ben and Rob forming team 'Steady Eddy' and Andy
the 'whippet' absolutely annihilating the opposition and winning the whole event by a massive
margin. It was a great few days and special thanks must go to Tom for despite the dodgy ankle, supported us all the way and Nell
who in her usual bouncy way came all the way down to make sure we were well fed. Here are a few photos (sadly, Andy was too quick at all of the transitions for Tom to be able to take any photos of him!).
Huge thanks to all our sponsors.

Hedge Fund Fight Night
3 days before the Devon coast to coast, Tom thought it would be a great idea
to get involved in the annual testosterone fuelled Hedge Fund Fight Night. This involved
getting in a boxing ring and being pummelled for six minutes against a much larger
and more expericenced opponent. As you can imagine it wasn't a happy occasion but we
should all salute Tom for even
contemplating it. Well done mate.

Weddings galore!
It's been a busy month for weddings. First up was Rob and Rach who tied the knot in very Credland fashion; a sheep barn in mid-wales was the venue with plenty of real ale and meat rolls for sustenance.
Thank you to everyone for making it such a special day and particularly Mike and Nell for stinking the place out with the lovely May Hill green!
The following week Steve Birch (fortunately this time not dressed as a woman with coconuts shielding his modesty) married the lovely Jen with the theme "Thirties Guys and Dolls" (see photo). And on the same day, Sam Freakley got married to Poppy. Congratulations to you all
for many happy years!

The Forest 3 Peaks
It seems that '3 peaks challenges' have become characteristic of the JHMF and so the Forest of Dean variety got underway for the second year running! Ably led by Les Caton, the Dean House Gang met the challenge without getting lost in the forest and with great enthusiasm covered the distance to Boulsdon Lea for beers and Barbecue. Congratulations to you all and for raising an impressive £500 (so far). I will make sure I put next year's walk in the diary early. It sounds remarkably civilised compared to Thomas's mad adventures!

Nottingham to Norfolk - 110 miles of pain!
Jeremy Stanton (a cousin of JH's) and his good friend Patrick Quinn have made it all the way from Nottingham to Norfolk and raised over £1,500 for the fund. Congratulations! Fantastic news.
The walk that was "100 miles further than either of us two small chaps have ever walked" proved to be ok and apart from a little bit of sunburn, the guys made it unscathed. What an amazing achievment. Well done chaps!

The John-Henry Football Pitch!
Who would believe it? A football pitch named after the great rugby playing legend John-Henry! But yes, it has happened. Oli Madgett has just returned from Kenya where he has been supporting a couple of football teams in the Machakos district through an organisation called Tackle Africa. They use football as a way of raising awareness around HIV/AIDS – through the coaching drills themselves and via info that’s distributed at games / developing the players as peer educators etc. Next year Oli will be returning to build goals / mark pitches etc. Once they have turned the mud pitch into something that resembles a football pitch it’s going to get named after John-Henry! Good work Oli.

Autumn Epic
A wee 150km bike ride up and down the hills of the Brecon Beacons.
This is how the website describes it:
"Although there are a couple of gentle interludes, this ride is not for riders who like it flat.
The course features unrelenting climbs including nearly two miles along a tumbling stream
on the Elan Valley mountain road out of Rhayader, and the agonising Glascwm Pitch at the
63-mile mark - which features three climbs of over 20%."
Well done to Dom, PK, Andy, Mark Nash and the rest of the team who managed to look like the most amateur and shambolic group ever to have graced the hills of Wales. But fair play to the guys who came away with some awesome times (PK on a fixed gear bike and Andy on a mountain bike) and Dom who survived despite 2 punctures (and the inferior bike...).

Berlin Marathon 2007
James Robertson and JHMF veteran Mel Edrich completed the Berlin marathon in 4 hours 7 minutes; not a bad effort
for someone who decided to enter the week before. James tells me he plans to run London next. Could it

30 Sep 07 Great North Run 2007
Following on from Chris and Pozza’s noble efforts last year, Kate Lee (aka 'Bus-Driver') has completed the Great North Run in aid of Marie Curie cancer, a superb charity that offers free nursing care to
people with cancer or other terminal illnesses in their own homes. In Kate's own words:
"Well I survived! It was very traumatic and I am having trouble walking today but it was a great day! I ran my little heart out and managed to complete the 13.1 miles in 1 hour 53 mins which was much faster than I ever thought I would be able to run! You’ll be glad to know I ended up coming 7512 in the race (out of 7513….or more like over 50,000!). I also managed to raise a grand total of £519!" Well done Katie and best of luck in Melbourne!

Cheyne Gang Channel Swim
The victorious and rather mad channel-swimming four, return alive and well after swimming to France. Read more about their heroics
from dodging sharks to covering themselves in goose fat!
George Cheyne, Robbie Constance, Cuan Brown & Mel Edrich have completed their amazing cross channel swim!
Although the picture of their route suggests that they got their bearings a little confused and decided that crossing the channel
by the shortest route (namely in a straight line) was just not enough of a challenge, we have been told that this is just to do with the
tides....
Anyway, damn good effort to all of you and for raising such an impressive amount for the fund. I think we'd all agree: "nothing is too much for this slick team of honed athletes".

3 Peaks Challenge (Mark II)
Unfortunately the 3 Peaks Challenge (Mark II) got off to a slow start with some logistical issues. Chris promises us he will be
back early next year when his van and driver become more reliable. Rumour has it he was running scared and in such awe at Team Rich
and Lizzie who completed it the week before!

3 Peaks Challenge (The real one!)
Three Peaks effort number one (inspired by a 4am walk up Skiddaw by Rich 3 months ago) was completed in
22 hours and 59 minutes!
This sub 23-hour attempt involved military instruction by Pete,
sprinting the last leg of Snowdon and half an hour later tricking poor John into believing
he had only 30 seconds to finish. It was an awesome weekend with emotional moments enhanced
by Prodigy and substantial consumption of Iron Bru and Kendal mint cake
(Farmer particularly affected by this as displayed by his stuttering and shaking).
Unfortunately roadkill was inevitable as Bron expertly took out a baby deer (unfortunately
with no time to return to the scene to enjoy venison on the gas stove). The boys did a sterling
effort on the walking front, but wish to declare Scafell Pike as officially the worst
place in the world after holding back the tears of mental and physical exertion.
Highlights of the support team included Lizzie and Bron becoming highly excited in
the middle of the night every time the sat nav declared there was a turn coming up,
and Bron loving the ‘new feeling’ that rumble strips on the road gave her. The 24
hours was ended by some heavy drinking in the pub (a grand total of 2 pints each was
enough) and Paul, never fading in his enthusiasm of fundraising, hassled many poor
drinkers but succeeded in wangling an extra 10 quid for the fund. Unfortunately the
ladies’ attempts at husky voices later on: ‘are you ready for your massages boys’ were
declined with the sound of snoring at 10.30pm on Sunday night. Thanks to everyone who
sponsored: we’ve raised around £2000!

Aimee's Great Desert Hike
Aimee has recently completed her marathon desert adventures....
Aimee Banay, a friend of JH's from Africa Venture days has just hiked through the Judean Desert, the lowest point on Earth,
and followed in JH's footsteps when he did the hike on his visit to Israel, Autumn 2005!
This is what she had to say before the hike:
"Now, John always knew that I’m basically rubbish at walking when I have to remain on my
feet for longer than 20 minutes, especially if it’s up hill, it’s hot (or raining) or when
I could drive there! So for that reason, I know he’d be laughing at me whilst I’m puffing
and panting, and most likely cursing my way round the desert- and thus I hope it would
make him happy!"
And this is what she said afterwards!:
"I completed the hike!! And so did husband Rubi!! See VIDEO for absoulte proof!
With just one bruise, three extra freckles and a wopping £625 in sponsorship
to show for it!!!!
BUT there's still lot's of time to sponsor me for those that haven't yey!!! Believe me, it was blooming hard work and i WANT YOUR MONEY !!!! Pleeeease! "
Awesome stuff Aimee! Well done from absolutely everyone who comes to this site!

Trans Rockies Challenge
Team John-Henry Memorial Fund of James Watson and Thomas Credland managed to finish their epic
trans rockies challenge in a credible 153rd (out of 290).
This was despite James' average 3 loo stops
per day and sleep deprivation from the notorious Credland snore. It took them 38 hours and 16 minutes
to complete the 600km and 35,000ft of climbing. Lessons learnt: important not to start at the back where are no passing places for 2 days.
And here they are after a fine day in the saddle, making the supermarket that little bit more hygienic!
Well done fellas - a fine effort.

Dunwich Dynamo 2007
Following on from last year's epic Dunwich Dynamo in which a renegade group led by JH
rode through the night to the East coast of Dunwich, a small group set off from the unconventional starting point of Cambridge.
BIt was a glorious Saturday but by the time the 15 of us had set off at 9pm, the first specks of rain came upon us.
From that moment on, the rain was unrelenting and by the time we reached the halfway point where we met up with the
throng from London, we were soaked to the bone. It was just as well that Nell and Gilly were waiting at Dunwich with a barbecue going.
By then, the sun had come out to play and as most of us drifted off to sleep after a refreshing dip in the sea, we were kept alive
by the continuous stream of freshly cooked bacon and sausage butties. Huge thanks to you both for all your support!

Cambridge City Bumps
Cambridge City bumps finally came to an end after a thrilling 4 days of bumping mayhem. The crew which JH rowed with
last year, 'Chaotique Express' stunned the crowds with another show of sporting excellence. They managed to bump four times in
division 2 and once in the top flight gaining their blades for the second year in a row. The crew were presented with the John Henry Memorial Cup for their commitment and sportsmanship over the course of the event
and are seen here having just bumped on the final evening.
(Last year JH's crew managed to bump every night of the event and therefore won their 'blades' (see photo). This was a remarkable achievement for the whole crew but particularly for JH whose strength over
this period was staggering.)

London to Cambridge cycle ride
Congratulations to Rachel Kennedy who finished the London to Cambridge cycle ride at the weekend in just 6 hours.
"We couldn't have asked for better weather - no rain in sight. However now I have a very strange shorts tan
line which isn't going to look so great on the
beach next week in Turkey". Good work Rachel and good luck with all the training for the big event in Kenya!

Big Credland Bash
The Big Credland party has been and gone! Over 300 came along to Boulsdon Lea to celebrate all the fundraising achievments of the last year and also
to mark Tom's 30th birthday and a good landmark one for Nell too. We were all entertained by some quality dancing from Thomas
and of course a certain Mr Mike Credland who seemed to have multiplied (see photo for one of his clones). Special thanks go the the Harlow Rugby boys who made it all the way over
and were particularly enthusiastic on the dancefloor. Thanks also to the breakfast club team of Ryan, Alice and George Maule for getting up so early on the morning after. Big thanks to all who made the lovely
puddings (Mrs P's was a favourite of mine!) and to everyone else who made the weekend such a success.
But without Mike and Nell none of this would have been possible so a HUGE thanks for organising everything. This is what they had to say:
"Thank you all for your tremendous contribution to the weekend and also for such wonderful support over the last twelve months. The last year has not been easy but the support of all John–Henry's
friends has been quite incredible and the enthusiasm with which everybody has contributed to the many fund raising events has been quite staggering. JH would have been very proud of you all. Thank you."
We managed to raise over £1500! There are a few photos available online.
If you have any more photos to share, do send them in.

Austrian Ironman
Thomas has yet again done something completely insane. As if 800km of Alpine climbing on a bicycle wasn't enough, Thomas has now recently returned
from his first Ironman Triathlon. Just in case you didn't know what this means, it's a 3.9km swim, 180km bike ride and topped off
with a Marathon run! And the crazy fool did all of this in under 11.5 hours. If you want to sponsor him
his sponsorship page is still open and he's just a few pounds short of an impressive £5,000. Well done fella.

Cotwold Olympics!
The Cotswold Olympics organised by old school friends of JH's was a massive success involving all sorts of
of bizzare activities from dance mat dance-offs to BBQ cook-offs.
Elin who organised the day had a few words to say:
"Congratulations to TEAM CRISIS for winning the olympics… a truly outstanding performance by all….
Namely Liz with the baked beans, Mark in the canoe, or should I say not in the canoe?!
Steve and Jen - amazing costumes for the hawaiian party (see delightful picture)
and for going to tescos in it (steve!). After all the shinanigans we raised £600 for the fund!
This is brilliant, thank you everyone for your participation and good sportsman/woman-ship…
Laura and I had so much fun, hope you guys did too."
Brilliant work guys! Here are just a few preview photos... There will be CD copies on sale at the party
for the full array!

Man versus Horse
The Man v Horse team have recently returned alive and well from their ordeal on the mountains of Mid Wales.
PK, Rob and Ty decided on a large full welsh breakfast 15 minutes before the
race start to give them the stamina to last the full 23 miles. We knew we were in serious company when
the other two members, Hamish and Andy opted for Welsh cakes and got out their sleek running vests. As it turned out
Andy came 2nd with a time of 2hrs 24min (Hamish 12th) and got within 2 minutes of beating the leading horse
(only happened twice in its 28 year history). The slower but steady others reckoned that if it wasn't for the breakfast
they would have been contenders for a trophy but settled for a steady time of under four hours. Big thanks to all our supporters
and especially Ryan and Alice who drove all the way down from Bangor, a nightmare round journey of 9 hours. The team raised over £700 for the fund.

La Route Routes des Grandes Alpes
The 'Tour des Idiots' as described by Thomas came to an end the other week with the team having cycled 800km
up and down the Alps. They raised an amazing £2,400!
The completely insane trio of Thomas, Michael van der Gerbil and Thomas
"Teen Wolf" Dalzell managed to carve a route right through the middle of the Alps from Geneva to Nice and with it doing 30,000m of climbing.
It took them just five days to finish it all.
Here's a Youtube link to see them in action. Impressed? They can still be sponsored through their online giving site
here.

Nell's Work Colleagues raise over £1,200!!
'Shaun the Sheep', the mascot/money box which has been accepting all the donations
from Nell's work colleagues (the adult care office) has been steadily growing over the past months through a Motley
of organised events.
It's been a really fantastic effort from them all - well done! Here's a selection:
A walk from Boulsdon Lea to May Hill and back. Karen's daughter and friends singing to
people around their neighbourhood. The Jan Garners sponsored walk around Newnham (as seen in the photo).
Admin office Raffle. Disco and raffle at Viney Hill Social Club. Ann's huge Bring and Buy sale.
Jan selling off her lovely clothes. Ros getting names for her Doll. Sheila and Angela
and others putting donations in Shaun rather than sending each other cards and presents.
And we wish them luck for all their future events.

Cambridge River Amble
Led by Mike and Nell Credland, around 20 of us took part in the Macmillan organised walk from Cambridge

'Soggy' was the word of the day as the heaven's opened and the 19-mile 'amble' turned into a bit of a mission.
But fuelled on by Nell's wondrous flapjacks we all finished and had a great day out walking the fens and finding out that the 'Five miles from Anywhere' pub, conveniently located
at lunchtime, actually served decent beer. Well done team!

Congratulations to Vicky Hewlett who finished her second marathon in just 5 years and managing to raise
over £1300 for the fund.
Here she is close to the end and with winning medal (and looking surprisingly
like she could quite happily do another one straight away!).
Well done also to Ben Venables (JH's partner-in-crime whilst in Uganda) who not only managed to complete
the marathon in less than 3 1/2 hours but also for raising £2,500 for the Brain and Spine Foundation.

Plymouth to Dakar in a
Triumph!
Now this really was the most brilliant idea!
Emma and Alice, friends
of Thomas’ have recently returned from driving their beloved 1973 Triumph
2000 all the way from Plymouth to Dakar. Instead of asking for simple sponsorship they marked out
the car into 15 areas (doors, wings, bonnet etc) which were open to
budding artists to decorate in any way they wanted. They received £50
for each section and the painting of the stunning car took place on a weekend in January. The photos show a 'before' and 'after' shot as well as the girls proudly in front of the triumph as they finished. What a brilliant effort!

May Hill Massacre!
I guess this is pretty self-explanatory! A horrible 8-mile run, up
and down May Hill just for giggles.
Well
The weekend began with a large
feed up at Boulsdon Lea (Roast Lamb no less) on Saturday evening and
then a few beers down at the Glasshouse. We tried to feed extra
beers to Thomas and the keen bunch who were clearly going to find
this a stroll but as it turned out they beat us all anyway. A number
of us camped up on top of May Hill to get truly into the spirit of
things; there was torrential rain and howling winds on the way up,
so it was
with
great relief that when we woke up on Sunday morning, the sun was
shining and it was only our heads that were a bit sore. Someone had
mentioned that it might be a bit boggy but no one could have
imagined that we would be ‘running’ through knee deep mud. Anyway,
the star of the day was Kiwi Jon who came an impressive 7th out of
300 (??) but Joe was hot in pursuit with a cigarette firmly attached
to his lips! Well done everyone but particularly Nell who kept us
all going with her wonderful cooking and constant supply of
flapjacks and beef sandwiches.

News of Rich Fisher
Rich Fisher, the mad Irishman and old friend of JH’s from
Nottingham drinking days was married in Scotland in December and had
a reception in Worcester on 13th January (nothing like stretching
out the celebrations). He and his new wife (the lovely Helen)
extremely kindly asked all their friends to donate money to the
John-Henry Memorial Fund rather than get them wedding gifts. I am
still in awe at this incredible generosity.

Harlow Rugby Club raise over
£1200!
Harlow Rugby Club, where JH used to play rugby after leaving
Nottingham, had an auction in his honour.
Up for grabs were some excellent items including Saracens Playing
Shirts, England Team Training Kit etc. The top Lot was an England 7s
Commonwealth Games Shirt worn by David Seymour. It was signed by
Seymour, Richard Haughton and Ben Russell who also played.
The day was advertised very well and the club managed to arrange
their 2nd XV fixture at home as well, so many of the boys that John
played with were also there. It was particularly nice as well that
Richard May who worked with John at GSK and has immigrated to New
Zealand was also back visiting this weekend.
There was a minute’s silence pre match and Lee Harron spoke a few
words after the match in memory of John. All of the boys stayed
around and had a fair few beers and a good sing song till very late.

Chris and Pozza do Great North
Run
On Monday 11th September, just 3 days after the funeral, Chris Campbell
found out that he could get a couple of places for the great north
run.
So with less than 3 weeks of training behind them, the two big
men courageously ran it dressed as beautiful cavemen. Of course as
good Cambridge sportsmen they couldn’t turn down a cheeky pint of
