JH Remembered

John-Henry loved to be in front of the camera whether this was taking a picture of himself (as on many occasions) or someone else capturing his cheeky grin or latest escapade. This page is a memory of all those great moments; see below for links to photos.

We have also recently received from Cambridge City Rowing Club a few words that sum up JH's character from their experience of rowing with him during the City bumps, Summer 2006 and a description of The John Henry Memorial Trophy:

The John Henry Credland Memorial Trophy
"John was well known for his love of rugby and of outdoor pursuits in general, but what we in the City of Cambridge Rowing Club will always remember him as was a rower, through and through.

John was a man naturally suited to the sport, a large and powerful frame meant that when John approached our novice crew nicknamed the "Chaotique Express" with a desire to row in our eight we were more than happy to find him a seat. The knowledge that he would be a safe pair of hands behind the oar, and with his massive tree-trunk thighs a welcome addition to our boatspeed made him an asset.

However as we trained together as a crew leading upto the Cambridge Town Bumps in July 2006, we quickly found that John brought quite a bit more than just brute force to our boat, a sense of mischeivous fun, a quick wit and an enduring smile became his hallmarks, and a nickname of "credibility" was soon imposed upon him.

John never let on to anyone in our crew throughout the days and nights of training that he was ill, I can only presume he just didn't want anyone to treat him any differently, and so it remained right up to the Bumps, the highlight of the Cambridge rowing calendar, a four night festival of rowing.

Every night we hit the water as a team and every night we won, catching the boat ahead of us. As a team, we powered the boat and earned our blades for bumping every night. It was only later that we found out that John had suffered badly with his health throughout the week, but just remained defiant that despite anything and everything he would row and not let his team down.

There are people who touch you with their very presence and then astound and inspire you with their actions, and that was John. In the wake of his funeral, his crew, cox and coach decided that a reminder of John's dedication and that legendary sense of fun should be put in place, and so the club was approached to do just that.

The John Henry Credland Trophy is awarded on the last night of bumps each year when all the rowing is finished and the socialising is in full flow. And, in what I think is a fitting tribute to John, the trophy is awarded, not to the crew with the most wins, not to the biggest, the fittest, or the fastest of the boats, but to the crew which the club captain deems has contributed most to the spirit of the bumps.

The crew that John rowed with, the Chaotique Express were awarded the trophy in its first year, and that same crew kept the same spirit of enjoyment and drive going this year to retain it.

It's a beatiful silver trophy and one which has already taken on a proud status within the club. I think that John would be happy to know that on its first outing the cup was filled to the brim with the finest old country cider, and glasses were raised to the big man himself!"
Brian (Chaotique Express crew member, 2006).
